Physical activity is a proven way to maintain good health. This is particularly important for city dwellers, as it is there that it is sometimes most difficult to maintain. The gym is an easy and quick choice. Unfortunately, it is expensive and not always available on the spot. That is why we decide more often to simply put on comfortable clothes and start training in the open air. It can be running, cycling, scooters, skateboards or roller skates. It is worth to open yourself up to as many disciplines as possible. It is certainly a good decision for your physical activity, but is it the same with health?
Some cities in Poland are the places with the highest smog concentration in Europe (not only in winter). In that case, when we decide to run a lonely run near the center, we are condemned to return to a much worse health condition than before. Physical activity in smog is not always a good idea.
What is smog and what is its impact on health?
Smog is an atmospheric phenomenon that has arisen as a result of human activity. A large number of cars, producing harmful exhaust fumes or burning coal in the furnace, cause pollutants to get into the air, in favorable weather conditions. The windless weather means that these pollutants are not solved, but are hanging over the city. There are two types of smog: "London", which occurs in the winter months, and "Los Angeles", which is responsible for pollution in summer. Regardless of the season, we decide on outdoor activities often, but not always at the right time.
That's why if you live in a big city and just want to go out and practice outdoors, it's worth checking the state of air pollution. That way you know when it's best to stay at home. Physical activity is the right way to prevent many diseases, but with high concentrations of smog it can do even more harm. During the increased effort a person breathes much more often and deeper. As a result, it is even more exposed to the risk of contaminants entering the respiratory system.
When we run, we breathe in 3 times more dirt than when we walk! In this case, the price you spend on the gym ticket will not be as high as the price for your health. Simple exercises at home will prove to be an equally good solution here. When going outside is still the only option, you can invest in appropriate anti-smog masks. At the moment there are many of them on the market, looking at the possibility of choice, size, color or pattern on the mask. However, the most important thing here is a suitable filter that will reduce the negative impact of polluted air.
Physical activity in smog - take care of your health
In times of increased air pollution, you should not opt for any outdoor physical activity. Furthermore, it is recommended that you stay indoors throughout the day. Outdoor activities actually have the best effect on your physical activity, but before you decide to do so, you need to make sure the environment is safe. In case of high air pollution you should stay at home.
